Sheffield Trading Co can trace its history back to 1983 when Don Alexander founded his shop selling goods made in Sheffield. He took out a 25 year lease on 475 Ecclesall Road well before the age of the Internet.
When Don retired in 2001 current owner Paul Iseard bought the business from him and renamed it The Famous Sheffield Shop. Its first website, sheffield-made.com, was launched in 2002, selling a wide variety of Sheffield made goods. From the early days of web trading it was clear that pocket knives and fixed blade knives were best selling lines.
In 2010, Paul participated in the UK Government's Export programme, intent on expanding exports of Sheffield knives. As part of this initiative, Paul developed his new website, www.sheffield-trading.com. In 2011, to coincide with the launch of the website, Paul travelled to the USA and exhibited at the Atlanta Knife fair, the biggest of its kind in the world.
Says Paul, "We are uniquely placed for our mission to sell the best of Sheffield's products. We have excellent relationships with our tightly-knit group of manufacturers, Little Mesters and specialist sub-contractors. With our experience of dealing with customers from all over the world we are in the best position to work at the interface between the knife manufacturers and the end users".
As the business has expanded Paul has employed additional staff to help with the development of the business and ensure the highest levels of customer service. All website orders are fulfilled from the shop by Paul, Jane, Joanne or Lynda.
2016 sees the re-launch of www.sheffield-trading.com on a new sales platform designed to work well with all forms of hardware from PCs to mobile phones.
